About Your Teacher
My name is Lynne, I am a British expat and I started the Learn English web site in 1999 whilst teaching English as a foreign language in Darmstadt, Germany. Initially it was to be a small project to enable my students to practise and keep in touch after their courses ended. Of course the web isn't like that and since then I have received over 10 million visitors from all around the world - learners and teachers. Nobody has yet come up with a way in which I can make money without compromising these ideals, and so I depend entirely on adverts, donations, sponsorship and affiliate links to help cover the ever increasing costs of hosting and developing the network. In 2001 I got a bit bored just talking about English - I taught it - I spoke it - I wrote about it - and so I decided to start a site to help expats who were thinking of or had already moved to Germany. Hence was born the aptly named British in Germany web site. I like to think I have helped one or two people to find accommodation at least. In 2003 due to the increase in traffic I set up a new web site called Learn English Online. This now runs the free lessons, there are now over 40 lessons and I hope to add more over time to enable everyone to improve their English in a fun, interactive way. In 2004 my mother passed away. She had been ill for some time and I had been looking after her. This meant I spent a lot of time sitting by her bedside, and for want of something to do Complete Herbal came about. It started as a way of putting the book by Culpeper onto the www, but ended as being my tribute to my mother who was a wealth of information on all things to do with the garden. As she is the one who rescued the book from a fire it seemed only fitting. The project is ongoing, but I'm in no hurry. Does the net really need yet another Blog? Probably not! But I am beginning to feel left out, so here I go. I definitely get the feeling that I may be becoming an Internet bore though. At the end of the day I write so much that goes out once via newsletters or mails to visitors to my web sites I thought this would give me the opportunity to remember some of the rubbish that I send into hyperspace. So here you will find an eclectic mixture of news, personal thoughts and fun stuff - keep reading.
Unlike many other English language web sites, Learn English is completely free, unaffiliated to any school or institution and requires no membership to access the many features.
What about making money? Well, I have been approached by some people who wanted me to commercialise the site, but I have always turned them down.
Why?

Thank you & hope many people improve their english with your help as i do bellieve it has become the language of the universe
Wishes are also very welcome.
Really? So: I worship your sense of humour, really!
Thank you for all your help my teacher.
This site is cool! While I may be a native speaker of English, I found the common mistakes page very useful.
Thanks everyone. Big cheesy grin from me. 8-D
Hello!
I work as a part-time English teacher in Brazil. Yesterday, I was surfing the Web and stumbled across LEO, which, in my opinion, is a very interesting site. It can be a useful manner of learning English as a Second Language, indeed.
Really like this site, it has been very clear and useful. One query though: in the section on superlative adverbs, you give an example phrase "Jill was the best student in the class". Surely "best" here refers to the noun "student, so it is an edjective not an adverb? Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm a bit confused

Beware cut and paste. :-)

Hello,
I really wondered to find out this website. I will really be helpful for me as i am unable to pay any amount at yet but really need to improve my english skills. I really appreciate the owner/teacher of this web site. My best wishes will always be with him/her. (As i am an Asian and unable to guess with the name that Lynne is MR. or MISS)
However i will feel happiness, if can do any thing for this website (by donating in furtre or something else...)
Once again Lynne, Thank you very much!!!
Best of LUCK!
Mohiuddin
Hi Mohiuddin,
Thanks for the nice compliments.
PS - it's Mrs, but you can call me Lynne.
I have been speaking English as a second language since the age of about five. But I have found this site very helpful indeed and have learnt a lot.
Thanks for your help and I wish you every success in the future for all your other projects.
Where can I send donations?
Each year I ask people to donate to a charity. This year it's "Medicin Sans Frontier".
A charity of your own choice is fine too.
good site but you, yourself, need to learn how to spell the word separate, it is not spelled sperate. That is a very common mistake, please rectify it.
Yes "seperate" is a very common mistake. In fact out of 66 separates I had 2 seperates, so thanks for pointing that out to me. You see none of us are perfect and I bet you wish you could edit your post. He he.
I am Sanjeev Gaur from India. I'm a part time English Teacher. My friend Nolly told me about your site. It's really a wonderful site for them whom mother tongue is not English and they want to speak. I've told many friends as well as students about this site.
I've established an English Club. Its address is English Club, 179, Ramgali-2, Raja Park, Jaipur-302 004 (India) Tel. # 91-141-2613227. Kindly include this information and update your site.
With warm regards,
Hi Sanjeev,
Thanks for the nice comments.
A bit more information about when you meet and what you do would be useful.
Hi Lynne,
This is Pallavi.
I am a software Engg.
I am not from COnvent school, so have no power on English.
At the time of interview, I practised for english skill in front of a mirror. And now I have the confidense that I can try to speak English. But want to speak fluent English so that no one can point at me as an English illiterate. So beside of work, I daily read chapters from this site. It's really helpful for me.
Thank you for sharing your great knowledge with us.
Thanks for all!! =)
I´m 21 years old and I live in Brazil.
I am sure that with your lessons I will learn english with fun and curture, very fast and well!
Your page is amazing!!
I started today and already learned a lot of things!!!!

Hi teacher,
I just found out about this website today!! How useful and interesting this website is!
I have already forwarded this site to all of my friends who want to improve their English skills!
Keep up the good work.
From one language teacher to another.
An interesting site into which must have gone many hours of work. Well done! Perhaps you would be interested in our site, which is also free, and provides a wealth of language learning material?

Hi,
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I am an Engineer.
I live in Tehran. Your site has been very useful for my improvment in english language.
Thanks
Hi,
I'd like to echo all the positive feedback about this great site.
I also wanted to point out one little error. On the page http://www.learnenglish.de/basics/nationalities.htm, "the UK" and "the Netherlands" are correctly listed with "the". However, "the USA" also needs the definite article.
Laurence
It does indeed. :-o
Hi Lynne.
I teach English in the U.S. I enjoyed taking a look at the comments of your students. I'm going to encourage mine to check out this site. Best wishes to all you learners out there!
Good afternoon. I want to ask a question about English Listening Chat. Can I only listen to the chat or I have to talk something.
I want to register but I would be grateful if you send me answer. My email adress is: keri4d@gk2-po.sk
THANK YOU AND GOOD SITE
I hope you don't mind if I answer this here. In the iVisit sessions I encourage people to chat with me on Fridays. But each session has an element of speaking - in the reading session I ask people to take a turn reading and in the listening session I ask questions about the text and encourage people to ask me if there's anything they don't understand. That said, if anyone wants to come along and just listen, they are welcome too.
Hello Lynne,
Love your English lessons!!
Do you have an email address?

Hi Lynne
You are such a adorable person, God bless you.
I'm a mother of two daughters, I have planning to continiou my study, but writing English is so hard,I even to shy to speak eventhough my vocabularies isn't that bad. I live in US for about a year, but English is my second language, I didn't past my essay writing exam, is there any sugggestion for me?
any way this side is really help, but I haven't retake my test.
keep going what you doing, you are one of milion people.
Hi
would you explain it to me, which part that I can klik so I can go to the chat room, please
thank you
hello I'm new, I love English but I can't go to school. thanks because i know Im gona learn.
Just a word to say a huge Thank You for this site.
You see, I AM English (well, half English, quarter Scots and quarter Austrian) but the standard of teaching all subjects in England is at an all time low whether it is Maths, foreign languages or even our own language!
It is so bad that I have had to supplement my children's knowledge myself at home.
In trying to learn Scots Gaelic I found that my own knowledge of grammar was insufficient and so had to start brushing up my knowledge.
I wanted to look up a particular point to do with possessives, apostrophes and plurals and Google pointed me to your site which, I have to say, is excellent, very clear and very comprehensive. It answered my question completely.
Strange that I should need a German site to clarify my English but on top of my previous comments I have worked with both German and Dutch people and found their standard of English is far better than many English people.
Again, let me say Thank you very much and keep up the good work.
One other thing though, please please please do not use American slang. I haven't seen any on your site and did notice the correct spelling of 'colourful' but it is a particular hate of mine. They take a copy of our language, change things for no good reason until it doesn't make sense and then try to give it back to us or worse, teach their slang to the rest of the world!
They need to remember that English is the language of English people and whoever else would like to speak it. They can speak however they like but it is not English.
e.g. color should be colour license s/b licence(noun), license(verb), center s/b centre, organization(obselete English) s/b organisation(modern English), and the one I hate most is specialty s/b speciality etc.
Anyway, none of that is your fault so thanks again for your very good site.

Hi Lynne
I am an old school Sri Lankan and was fortunate to have my entire education in the English stream. Today I checked out a few sites to help my secretary to improve her English and stumbled across your site. Your blog is not boring and, frankly, your site is fascinating and is easily one of the best I have seen. Congratulations, thanks and goodluck in all your ventures

My name is Jeaneane Peterson,
I, along with my brother have developed a new website called www.international-penpal.com. Our mission is to provide a social atmosphere for adults 18-years or older in an international social media webpage. Our intent is to attract customers of all cultures, all nationalities, and all countries to meet, greet and get to know each other on our social website. By providing creative social group outlets, such as blogs, forums, chat-rooms, music, Youtube, articles, groups/clubs, events, photos, their own private pages and other resources we are providing an outlet for people for different cultures to express themselves in a non-critical way. Since, the site is primarily in English, this is a perfect way for students to learn, or improve their English language skills, and to learn about, not only American customs, but cultures, from vast diverse countries throughout the world.
International-penpal is an excellent tool in aiding your students to speak English, or many other languages. The site is a free service to its members; all they have to do is sign-up. It is also a perfect way for people to keep in contact with family and friends all over the globe.
I hope that you will pass on the information, regarding the website, to all of your students. Please visit www.international-penpal.com and see for yourself what a great, fresh site this is.
You can email me – Jeaneane Peterson at jraypet@yahoo.com or Michael Walrath at mirath@maine.rr.com for further information.

On most of the pages if you double click on a word a pop up window will appear giving the definition and American pronunciation. :-)

Hi,
I'm interested in buying a link on your site' leading to a website that I'm promoting.
Is this possible - and if it is, who can I contact?
Hi Gilad,
You can contact me via the forum or post your email here and I'll contact you (don't worry it won't appear in the comments). You might want to look at the sponsors and advertisers pages too.

Practise practice!!
(Pun intended! I do hope you see it!)
Hello Lynne,
I have already drawn your attention twice to the common mistake you have made (or is it just a typo?) in: "Need more practise? Try this"
on your: English Homophones web page
http://www.learnenglish.de/homophones/Homophones.htm
"Do you know a homophone that isn't here? Fill in a form and send it in.
Need more practise? Try this!"
Since I don't see it corrected yet, I am writing to you here in a separate note and not in a filled form to send in a homophone:
practice, practise
with the sentences:
Need more practise?
Need more practice?
Need to practise more?
Need to practice more?
Maybe you haven't noticed it because I had sent it to your HOMOPHONE page. I wonder where one has to write to you about it.
And funnily enough on your page:
Common Mistakes and Confusing Words in English
you list practice vs practise as a one of them.
Sincerely yours,
Dar
Sometimes I just need to be nagged. Actually my main computer has been down for a few weeks, so if you contacted me then, it's sitting waiting for me there. Thanks for letting me know (it was a typo). As I say on my site - we all make mistakes. :-)
I am a programmer that has been working on a content management system. I would like to use your language lessons as demonstration content.
The portfolio piece would be public and free on the web with full attribution to Learn English Online. I would not use ads or otherwise make money from your content.
In the end I will be releasing my code publicly as well, and of course I will provide it to you with all your imported content for free upon request.
Can I republish your content for these purposes?
- David Valentiate
davidv.ca
Hi David,
That should be fine, as long as there is no commercial use of the material and attribution is given.
Good luck. Let me know if there is anything else you need.
Thanks for permission. I have no commercial intentions.
I'll keep you updated on any progress I make.
Hello Lynne,
Have you stopped acknowledging, i.e. saying "Thanks to ....", those who had sent you homophones?
Just asking, since we had sent you quite a few which we see appearing on your homophone page without any "Thanks to ........" accompanying them.
And just wondering why that would be.
Thanks Lynne,
........
P.S.
And we won't mention any names here; just not to force any "Thanks to ........" on you, nor to squeeze any out of you.
Hi,
No, I haven't stopped acknowledging contributions, but they're all on my main computer, which is broken. So at the moment I'm winging it on my laptop. As soon as my computer is fixed I'll go through them.
Thanks for noticing. :-)
Hello Teacher,
May I correct another of your mistakes, please?
Yes, I know we all make mistakes, but this is a rather big one I've noticed quite a lot of Brits themselves make.
So sorry, but on your page http://www.learn-english-online.org/Lesson4/Course/Lesson4.htm#Phonetic way down at the bottom in the "Please and thank you" part, it's not "Your welcome" but "You're welcome" which is a common response to "Thank you".
Lynne, don't you realise it is simply a contraction of: "You are welcome." It is not my welcome, or your welcome, or anybody else's welcome for that matter. It is that if you thank me I respond: "You are welcome"
So if you thank me for this I will say in advance: "You're welcome, Lynne."
Thank you, Lynne.
Hello,
Great website, Lynne. Keep up the good work. But.... There is always a "BUT"!
I've noticed you keep excusing yourself for not reacting to this or the other because of your broken main computer. I thought the forms were sent to your website, not to your computer. And I thought a website is online precisely so that one can access it from different computers, not only one. Just wondering...
And while wondering about that... I was also wondering... why you consider "wonder" and "wander" as homophones... ?? ... ?? ...
Since when, and where in the English speaking world, are these two words homophones??
I keep telling my students not to confuse them, and to distinguish between these two words; in which the first vowel is pronounced in English just the other way round as in some Latin based phonetic mother tongues!!:
(o/ʌ/ and a/ɒ/)!!
And here you are listing them as homophones.
I've checked it in several dictionaries and even the American pronunciation of these two words is different. They are not homophones!! I wonder where from have you got the idea that they are. Or did your mind wander while at it?
Cambdridge Dictionaries Online:
wonder /'wʌn.dəʳ/ US/-dɚ/
wander /'wɒn.dəʳ/ US/'wɒ:n.dɚ/
WordReference.com:
wonder ['wʌndəʳ]
wander ['wɒndəʳ]
Merriam-Webster:
wonder \ˈwən-dər\
wander \ˈwän-dər\
Wiktionary:
wonder (UK) IPA: /ˈwʌndə/
(US) IPA: /ˈwʌndɚ/
Rhymes: -ʌndə(r)
wander
Rhymes: -ɒndə(r)
And while I am wandering/'wɒn.dʳɪŋ/ around the town I do keep wondering /'wʌn.dʳɪŋ/ ... ..?.. ... ..?.. ... Why does Lynne consider wonder ['wʌndəʳ] and wander ['wɒndəʳ] as homophones??
With best wishes from
a wondering/'wʌn.dʳɪŋ/ .?. wanderer/'wɒn.dʳəʳ/ ...
No need for you to say sorry, that should be my response.
OK - you win. Wander and wonder aren't homophones. Do you know my hubby and I have even argued about this.
As for my computer. Yes, some websites have wizzy databases that can store messages and contact form information. I'm afraid my site doesn't. Sigh.
I did try using this on the magazine, but within days it was so full of spam I gave up. That's why I stick to the forum and the blog.
Apologise for posting this letter in this forum.

Hi I've found your site to be a great resource and added it as a link on mine, it would be much appreciated if you'd reciprocate the favor, thank you
~ Jason Miller
The problem is I have no idea what your site is.
Dear Teacher,
I can you justify the answer of this equation.
1 + 6 - 2 x 2 ÷ 2.5=4
One plus six minus two multiplied by two divided by two point five equals four
This was use in the example from Learn English Basic- LEO network , English Numbers.
My students have different answers (common answer was 1.2) and they have different way of solving the mathematical problem.
Thank you.
My name is Uzma Hussain
My email is uzma.hussain@lums.edu.pk
Sorry, I should have added brackets, which I have done now. Basically I was just trying to show all the simple symbols, rather than trying to test anyone's mathematical abilities. Kudos to your students. :-)
hoping you could teach me jack. quite curious about the engl ish matrix, and though i can see the 6,7,911-13 patterns, the rules as yet allude me.
(that sum without even trying speak jack... blows my mind)
help anyone?

Oh thanks, but I don't do link exchanges.
There is an "add your link" feature for free on my web resources page. You're welcome to use that.
Hi Teacher,
I wonder what you mean by: "pronounced correctly" in your note to Homophone #135.
"!Note - when pronounced correctly wheel isn't strictly a homophone"
Or should I ask WHICH pronunciation you consider as CORRECT.
Or maybe I should ask pronunciation FROM which part of the British isles is CORRECT for you. ?!?
Well, according to the phonetics in the "Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary" weal /wiːl/ and wheel /wiːl/ are homophones. And there is no such note, as yours, as to the correct pronunciation of wheel; not even another pronunciation is suggested.
Hmmm - fair point, you see I aspirate all "wh" sounds - which, whale, wheel, because that's how I was taught (very strictly taught I might add) because I needed to differentiate between "My father comes from Wales," and "My father comes from whales"! But yes, in many parts of the world, like the wales, the "h" is disappearing. I'll try to make it clearer.
I found this quote on Answerbag, which amused me somewhat:-
"Very few people pronounce the H, in these question words. It is based on location & accent only. Mostly upper class people in the UK would pronounce like this."
Dr Julius Edgar - University of New England, Language Faculty
So, maybe it's simply that I'm upper class. ROFL
By the way - DON'T SHOUT!
Hi Teacher,
In that case, why don't you add the same note: "!Note - In some areas and dialects "wh" is still pronounced "hw"." to Homophone #48 ?!?
And BTW I wasn't shouting; I was simply HIGHLIGHTING those words in this PARTICULAR way, since there is NO OTHER way to do so on "Your Teacher's Blog" web site.
Anyway, thanks for your upper-class explanation. :) :) :)
And may I ask? WHY don't you write Wales with a capital letter? I quote: "like the wales"? I thought it was a proper noun, wasn't it?
And another query. Do you know? Why the "Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary" does not mention this "wh"-sounds aspiration at all?
Just curious!
AND trying to learn, as well as teach, English...
And BTW I am not shouting at all, at all; just >>> :) :) :) and >>> HIGHLIGHTING...
And so as to be consequent MAYBE you should add the same note to homophones: # 121, #107, #35, ... I quote:
!Note - In some areas and dialects "wh" is still pronounced "hw".
... as well as to who (hwo ?) knows ??? how many other ones beginning with "wh" (where "wh" is still pronounced "hw".) that will turn up on your homophone page...
BTW, I have just found an interesting article in Wikipedia about the "Phonological history of wh"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonological_history_of_wh#Wine-whine_merger
Maybe the Cambridge Advanced Learner's dictionary doesn't wish to confuse the issue. They don't mention the word "blog" either.
It's meant to be "like the whales" but I decided to play a bit with the spelling.
Reference "who". Maybe one day we'll be saying "woo knows"?
Thanks for the link, I had already added it. Great minds think alike, or, Fools never differ.
Oh and you have inspired me to add a page on Netiquette:-
http://www.learnenglish.de/ImproveEnglish/netiquette.htm
hi my teacher I am fadoua, a Moroccan girl.Well, I study English at the university. The website is cool and wonderful. What I expect to find in it is some advanced English grammar, some semantic and public speaking courses.
THANK YOU MY DEAR TEACHER FOR ALL!!
Please my teacher provide us with some tips of how to deal with poems, novels, or short stories.
Good day,
Greeting from across the pond. I'm a native English speaker and I stumbled upon your site while attempting to figure out if there was any rhyme or reason to when we use the prefix in- vs. im- (e.g. inability, inaudible, immune, immoral). Anyway I discovered that your list of prefixes is incomplete (there it is again). Perhaps this was intentionally left off the list as the prefix im- is seldom used. Just thought I would let you know. Cheerio!
Hello pond dweller, (just joking). Impossible that I left it off, extremely imprudent of me. I shall rectify it immediately.
I'm a student from china.Thank you very much.
I hope I will set up a free web site like you for other things.
Hi Teacher,
What a shame you have changed the homophone page so that now each homophone appears with its number on its own separate page.
Don't you see Lynne that now we have to wait for each of these pages to load ... and then load back again ... and load again ...
What a load of loading ... ... ...
Your old system allowed us to simply scroll up and down the page and look at all the homophones in one place, i.e. on one page without having to wait for them to load ...
Is there any chance at all that you will go back to your old system? It would be greatly appreciated, Lynne.
Thank you.
Hi,
Thanks for the feedback. The main problem was that with over 140 homophones the page was taking longer and longer to load, and people were having to scroll down further and further (I had a lot of complaints about that). I take your point though and I'll make it easier for people to find the latest one, I've also made it easier for people to leave a comment or a new homophone (I hope you like that feature). :-)
